ex)A corndog costs $1.05. it is 15% off. How much will it cost?

1.make 15% a decimal by going to the left twice = .15

2.you subtract .15 from 100=85

3.now multiply, 1.05x85=8925

4.since .15 and 1.05 there are 4 spaces to the left that lead to the decimal. so you move left 4 decimals=.8925 therefore, it now costs 89 cents

$(%-100)

This is how my math teacher taught us, sorry if its confusing but you get it eventually. :)
