The Group of 7 (G7) started off as G6 in 1975 comprising France, West Germany, Italy, Japan, United Kingdom and United States. They were joined the following year by Canada. The G7 countries accounted for around half the global GDP and met on a regular basis to discuss global economic issues.
West Germany was, in due course, replace by Germany and, more recently, the core group has been expanded to G8 and includes Russia. There are several larger groups now - including China, Brazil, India and other major players in the global economy.
