They are not. Common aspect ratios are 4:3 and 16:9. As an example, imagine a screen with an aspect ratio of 2:1. What that means is that the object is twice as wide as it is tall.

With 4:3, the screen is 4 parts wide, to 3 parts tall. Lets take a common 4:3 resolution 320x240. If you split the 320 width into 4 parts, you would have 80. if you then took 80 and multiplied by 3, you would have 240.
