If he was called the father of mathematics, it was probably by someone who did not understand mathematical history at all - or perhaps of parenthood. It would be extremely strange that if a father was born several thousand years after what he was supposedly the father of! Aristotle and Euclid had already helped mathematics grow a couple of thousand years before Ramanujan was born!

This is NOT to minimise his contribution to mathematics, but father he was not.

Who called him so? Probably somebody thought that he made important contributions to mathematics. Which he did - but calling him "the father of mathematics" is an exaggeration.

What were Ramanujan's contribution to mathematics?

Contribution of S. Ramanujan is widespread in fields of Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Number theory etc. He has also made some extraordinary contributions to the fields like Hyper-geometric series, Elliptic functions, Prime numbers, Bernoulli`s numbers, Divergent series, Continued fractions, Elliptic Modular equations, Highly Composite numbers, Riemann Zeta functions, Partition of numbers, Mock-Theta functions etc. In reality, apart from a few elementary ones, most of the contributions of S. Ramanujan belong to a higher realm of mathematics that is often referred to as Higher Mathematics. But the most significant contributions are Ramanujan Prime, Ramanujan Theta function, Ramanujan-Soldner constant, Ramanujan`s sum etc.

Why did srinivasa ramanujan become famous?

Srinivasa Ramanujan was a great mathematician. He was interested only in mathematics. He concentrate only on maths hence failed in other subjects. He was later called abroad to meet one of the great mathematicians who was really impressed by him. He continued practicing maths and made many new formulas which we study. Hence, he became a great mathematician, as well as famous.
