Area is the amount enclosed by the perimeter. Consider an area of 6 units²

It could be 6 units long by 1 unit wide: area = 6 units × 1 unit = 6 units²

Or it could be 3 units long by 2 units wide: area = 3 units × 2 units = 6 units²

So you can see, it is IMPOSSIBLE to give a single answer for a rectangle with a given width - there are two DIFFERENT rectangles with the SAME area.

As you want a rectangular area, then:

length × width = area

→ length = area ÷ width

1 acre = 4840 sq yards

→ length = 0.31 × 4840 sq yards ÷ width = 1500.4 sq yards ÷ width

So choose your width in yards and you can then calculate the required length.

Examples:

  • Width = 1 yard→length = 1500.4 sq yards ÷ 1 yard = 1500.4 yards→a rectangle 1 yard by 1500.4 yards;
  • Width = 10 yards→length = 1500.4 sq yards ÷ 10 yards = 150.04 yards→a rectangle 10 yards by 150.04 yards;
  • Width = 38.735 yards→length = 1500.4 sq yards ÷ 38.735 yards ≈ 38.735→a rectangle 38.735 yards by approx 38.735 yards (nearly a square);
  • Width = 1 inch = 1/36 yard → length = 1500.4 sq yards ÷ 1/36 yards = 54014.4 yards→a rectangle 1 inch by 54014.4 yards.
