What does mean mode range and mediam mean?

The range is the spread of data - the largest number minus the smallest. The mean, mode and median are types of average. The mean is the sum of the numbers divided by the number of numbers (e.g. the mean of 1, 1, 3, 5 and 8) is 3.6). The mode is the number that appears most often (1 for the previous example). The median is the 'middle number'. To work it out, place the numbers in order from lowest to highest. If the number of numbers is odd, the median is the number in the middle (3 for the given example). If the number of numbers is even, the median is the mean of the two middle numbers (e.g. for 1, 1, 3 and 5, the middle numbers are 1 and 3 so the median is 2). The mean and median often are similar but the mode is often greatly different to the two other averages.

What is the relation between quartile deviation and standard deviation?

Strictly speaking, none. A quartile deviation is a quick and easy method to get a measure of the spread which takes account of only some of the data. The standard deviation is a detailed measure which uses all the data. Also, because the standard deviation uses all the observations it can be unduly influenced by any outliers in the data. On the other hand, because the quartile deviation ignores the smallest 25% and the largest 25% of of the observations, there are no outliers.

What does it mean when a data set of 10 measurements has a mean of 15 and a standard deviation of 0?

It means that all of the ten numbers are 15!Standard deviation tells you how spread out the data is from the mean value. Or in other words, it tells you how far the numbers in your data are away from the mean value. If the standard deviation is a high number, it means the data is largely spread out and that there are big differences in the data. The numbers in the data would be quite far from each other. For example, if you had data like: 8, 35, 13, 47, 22, 64, this would probably mean that you'll get a high standard deviation because each of the numbers are very spread out.On the other hand, if the standard deviation is small, it tells you that the numbers in the data are quite close together and that there is only a small difference between the numbers in the data. For example, if you had data like: 19, 25, 20, 22, 23, 18, this would probably mean that you'll get a low standard deviation because each of the numbers aren't that spread outIn the scenario you've given, the standard deviation is ZERO. This means that there is no spread or variation AT ALL with the numbers in your data. This means every single number in the data is the same.Since your mean is 15 and every number in your data is the same, that means that all the ten numbers in your data have to be 15!Hope that makes sense.Jamz159

If the range is bigger is the data more spread out?

less spread out the data is

Why does the standard deviation get smaller as the individual in a group score more similarly on a test?

Because the standard deviation is a measure of the spread in scores. As individuals score more similarly, the spread gets smaller. Because the standard deviation is a measure of the spread in scores. As individuals score more similarly, the spread gets smaller. Because the standard deviation is a measure of the spread in scores. As individuals score more similarly, the spread gets smaller. What is the term in statistics for the difference between the smallest and largest values in the data set?

RangeThe term for the difference between the smallest and the largest values in a set of data is called the range. It is probably derived from the idea that the values of the numbers in the data could range anywhere from the lowest to the highest values but not beyond. The range is a measure of how disperse (spread out) the values are but it is not a very powerful measure.
