He took the weight of the crown and then used water displacement to determine the volume. He could then deduce the density of the crown. Various types of metals have different densities. Density is the mass to volume ratio. Or in better terms, how tightly the molecules are packed together in a substance. If the density of the crown was different than that of any other piece of gold, it was not gold. The bath make him weight then die.

How was density used to detect fraud?

Archimedes was told by the king to find out if his crown was made of pure gold, calculating the density of the crown, Archimedes found it to be a mix of gold and silver.

If Archimedes had only been able to find a piece of pure gold with a mass one-half that of the crown how could he have determined whether the crown was pure gold?

Archimedes came across concept of density - that is MASS divided by VOLUME. For each substance this ratio is different but a CONSTANT for that substance. Thus the mass you are dealing with is irrelevant if the crown had the same ratio as the piece of pure gold then the crown was pure god, if it did not then the crown was not gold.

What did the king want Archimedes to find out?

That ur stupid and get off of wiki answers and hit the books. ....LOL:{)

What is the approximate value of a gold dental crown?

It costs about $1,000 for all the work and the crown and installation. You can find places at cheaper costs.

How did Archimedes find out the crown wasnt gold?

By studying the displacement of water caused by pure gold and silver of the same mass, he proved that the gold crown was not of pure gold as claimed by the jeweller.

What is the story behind Archimedes principle?

The Story Behind the ScienceHieron, the king of Syracuse and Archimedes' friend, wanted to know whether his crown was made of solid gold. The king suspected that the gold had been mixed with silver, which is worth less than gold. So he asked Archimedes to try to resolve the question. The solution would have been easy if the king had allowed the crown to be melted down. Since that was no possible, Archimedes had to find another solution to determine the metal content of the crown. Archimedes discovered the answer while at a public bath. He noticed that when he got into the water, it overflowed the tub. By measuring the overflow, he found that the volume-the amount of space a thing occupies-of the spilled water was equal to the volume of his body under water. He realized he could determine the gold content of the crown by measuring the water it would displace against the amount of water displaced by a lump of gold weighing the same as the crown. The crown and lump of gold would each displace the same amount of water if the crown were solid gold. If the crown contained silver, it would displace more water, since the volume of a weight of silver is greater than the volume of the same weight of gold. With this discovery, Archimedes leaped from his bath and in his excitement raced naked down the street toward his home, shouting "EUREKA! I have found it!"Archimedes was the first to develop the physical law that is now known as Archimedes' law. The law explains buoyancy, or why objects seem to lose weight in water or other liquids. This principle has been applied ever since to test precious metals.

When do you stumble across the answer to a problem?

Solutions to problems can 'hit' you at any time. Take Archimedes for example. He was asked to determine whether a crown that had been made for King Hiero II, was as pure as the gold that had been supplied to make it, or if some silver had been substitued. The only problem Archimedes had - was that he was not allowed to damaging the crown. While taking a bath, he niticed the water level changed as got in and out - and realized that this level change could be used to find the volume of the crown. The submerged crown will displace the same amount of water as its own volume. Dividing the mass of the crown by the volume of displaced water, gives the density of the crown. The density would be lower if cheaper metal were added. Archimedes was so xcited by his discovery, he apprently leapt from his bath, and ran naked through the streets to the palace, crying 'Eureka !' (Greek for 'I have found it'). The same test was conducted on the crown - successfully proving that silver had been mixed in with the gold.

Who invented the law of displacement?

The mathematician Archimedes of Syracuse. The most common story (which was first told by Vitruvius but doesn't pop up in Archimedes' known works) goes that King Hiero II had a votive crown forged for a temple, and he supplied the pure gold the goldsmith was to use. However, when he got the crown, the King asked Archimedes to determine whether the goldsmith had used all of the gold supplied or substituted silver for some of the gold. Archimedes couldn't melt the crown down into a regular shape to find its density, because he had to leave the crown intact, so he puzzled over the problem for some time. While taking a bath one day, he noticed that the water level rose as he stepped in, and realized that he could use this effect to solve the problem, and supposedly ran through the streets screeching "εὕρηκα!" (heureka!, Greek for "I've found it!") naked. When he performed the test with the crown, he found that the goldsmith had indeed substituted silver for some of the gold.
