You can use any units of distance you want.

If you measure the sides of a rectangle using feet, the area will be in square feet (ft²)

If you measure using meters the area will be in square meters (m²)

Here is an example of the math

Area = length x width = 3 meters x 4 meters = 3x4 meters x meters = 12 square meters = 12 meters squared = 12 m²
