A set of polygons might have such shapes in it. Certainly the set of all polygons does. So does the set of all polygons with fewer than 5 sides. Many other examples could be given. I am avoiding the use of the word "group", because it has a technical meaning in modern algebra.

Hexagon is to pentagon as rectangle is to?

as rectangle is to square I would say Rectangle is to Triangle. Because Hexagon-6sides, pentagon-5 sides, Rectangle-4 sides, triangle 3 sides. But that is just me :)

What three shapes made from straws would be rigid?

triangle , square , rectangle

Why do you have to cut the area of a triangle in half?

Because otherwise you would have found the area of the rectangle/square (the rectangle/square being if you put two of the triangles together).

If you add all the angles in a shape which of these shapes would have the smallest sum triangle square rectangle rhombus?

Triangle, since the sum of its angles is 180. The sum of the angles of the square, rectangle, and rhombus are all 360.

What would the cross section of a square pyramid be?

Depending on the inclination of the plane used for the cross-section, it could be a square, rectangle, trapezium, triangle.

Can a triangular pyramid be called a rectangle pyramid?

No. A triangular pyramid describes a triangle whose base is a triangle (not just the sides which define it as a pyramid), whereas a rectangular pyramid is one whose base is a rectangle. A triangle and a rectangle are not the same (a triangle is not a rectangle, and a rectangle is not a triangle), so it would be incorrect to refer to a triangle-based pyramid as a rectangle pyramid.

Why is a triangle and a square congruent?

congruent means that all the sides are the same length. the sides of a square have to be the same length or else it would be a rectangle. Not all triangles are congruent though. there are other types of triangles unlike the square, where there is only one type.

What has opposite sides of the same length?

For quadrilaterals, it would be a rectangle, a square, or a rhombus. Two sides of an isosceles triangle are also equal.

The legs of a right triangle are 12 and 16 inches long respectively What is the area of the triangle?

Lets work it out:- If the legs are 12 and 16 inches, then a rectangle of that size would be 192 square inches in area. As the the diagonal of the rectangle makes two equal triangles (of legs 12 and 16 inches), the area of one of these is half the area of the triangle - 192/2 = 96 square inches.

Does a rectangle always have congruent sides?

The answer is no, if a rectangle's sides were congruent, it would be a square not a rectangle.

What are the main geometric shapes?

There are many geometric shapes. But the square, octagon, rectangle, pentagon, triangle, circle, hexagon and heptagon would be considered the main shapes.
