You can't. You can only subtract like terms. Like terms must have exactly the same variables and exponents on the variables.

What is a term whose variables and exponents are the same?

These terms are called like terms. For example: x and 2x are like terms. But: x3 and 4x2 are not like termsbecause although the variables are the same, the exponents are different.

What does it mean if a function is a polynomial?

It means that it has constants and variables that has a form of something like 7x2+2x+5 or something like that. Variables can not be used as exponents though, and exponents have to be whole numbers. Also, variables can not be a denominator.

What is a term with the same variables raised to the same exponents?

They are known as like terms.

When can you add or subtract coefficients?

You can add and subtract coefficients when they occur in like terms, which means they have the same variable. 2x + 3x = 5x (This addition can take place because all of the variables are x, and are therefore like terms.) and 5y - 2y = 3y (This subtraction can take place because all of the variables are y, and are therefore like terms.) However, if the variables differ, they are unlike terms, and you cannot add or subtract the coefficients. For example: 2a + 3b cannot be added because a and b are different variables, and therefore unlike terms. 3c - 2d cannot occur because c and d are different variables, and therefore unlike terms..

What is a6 divided by a5?

1.2

Is x and y like terms?

No. For purposes of combining "like terms", you need terms that have exactly the same variables, with the same exponents (if there are any).

Simpilfy the expression 9y-5y?

4y because they have like variables (y) you can just subtract them like normal

How do you divide a exponent?

If you have the same base on both of the exponents that you are dividing, all you have to do is subtract the exponent. For example if I have a problem like: 66/ 63, your answer will be 63.
