do you mean 2x + 2y? and if you do you would get this

2(x+y) but that's as far as you can go seeing as their are no more common terms

You factor x^2+y^2 like this. x^2+y^2=(x+y)(x-y) +2y^2

or

You can do (x+iy)(x-iy)
