When we move numbers from one side of an equation to another we are actually performing an action to each side of the equation. For example

X + 3 = 7

to get the 3 to the other side we must subtract it from the left side of the equation. What we do to one side we must also do to the other

X + 3 - 3 = 7 - 3

Most people skip writing the above step and go straight to the next notation

X = 7 - 3

the answer of course is

X = 4

When you multiply both sides by a negative number the inequality must be flipped over. You do not do that when multiplying by a positive number.
