civil engineers have special heavy duty boots called engineers boots.

these boots are quite expensive

so they use trigonometry to save money

they can stand on one side of a river set up 2 points a known distance apart

and just sight across the river thru a protractor with a telescope to the other side at any target they see

this way they dont need to carry a tape across the river to measure the distance

their boots would get wet and muddy

when they do this for a few years they save enough money to hire a rodman

to cross the river and place high visibility targets for them so they make less mistakes and make even more money
