If your data is this: 1 cm, 5 cm, 6 cm, 14 cm, 18 cm, then the median is 6 cm. You cross off the lowest uncrossed number, then the highest uncrossed number, and continue until you have only one or two numbers. If there is only one number left, then it is the median. If there are two, average them. The average is the median.
