To an extent, the solution depends on the domain. 5x = 3 has no answer if x must be an integer, but it does (3/5) if x can be a fraction. Similarly, x^2 = 5 has no rational answer but there is an irrational answer; x^2 = -5 has no real answer but it has a complex answer.
There are also some functions that simply cannot be solved - the best that can be done is to find numerical approximations.
