if you mean x^2-36

1x^2+0x-36

a=1

b=0

c=-36

you can use quadratic formula

(-b -+ sqrt (b^2-4ac))/2a

you'll get (sqrt(144))/2= 6 and (-sqrt(144))/2= -6 as your two roots

your answer (x+6)(x-6)

or use inspection: what factors of c will give you b when added together if

c=-36 and b=0. the roots 6 and -6 will get you 0 when added and -36 when multiplied.

because 6 and -6 are your chosen factors

the factored expression is (x+6)(x-6)

The factors of x2-13x+36 are 'x-9' and 'x-4'because the expression (x-9)(x-4) can be simplified as x2-13x+36.

If that's plus 36, it factors to (x - 9)(x - 4)

If it's minus 36, it gets ugly in a hurry.

Factors of 36 which add to 13 are 4 & 9 so:

(x + 4)(x + 9)

or

(x - 4)(x - 9)

depending on the sign of the term 13x.

I'm guessing that's x2 + 13x + 36. So you're looking for two factors of 36 whose sum is 13. It's not 36 and 1, 18 and 2, 12 and 3 or 6 and 6.

(x + 4)(x + 9)
