Name the length x & the width y
then, x = 5 + 2y
knowing that the area of the rectangle is obtained from the multiplication of its length times its width ,then:
x * y = 42
(5 + 2y)*y = 42
5y + 2y^2 = 42
2y^2 + 5y - 42 = 0
solving the above equation you'll obtain these two values for x :
y = 3.5 which is adopted (as it's a positive value)
y = -6 which is rejected as a length due to its minus sign.
Now,solve for x:
x = 5 + 2y
x = 5 + 2(3.5)
x = 12
Conclusion:
The length of the rectangle is equal to 12 feet &
its width is equal to 3.5 feet.
