Fractions and decimals are different ways of notating the same thing: a number that falls between two whole numbers. In its simplest form, think about a distance or a value that is exactly halfway between 3 and 4 of something.

As a mixed number, that would be 3 and 1/2

As a fraction, that would be 7/2

As a decimal, that would be 3.5

Some people refer to mixed fractions or decimal fractions to underscore the fact that they're all the same.
