We can solve this problem using a ratio. Since a 6 foot man casts a 4 foot shadow we can write this ratio as 6:4. If we reduce this ratio we get 3:2. Now we're stating that for every 3 feet of height, the shadow cast will be 2 feet.

Now we can work our problem out using a small table:

  • 3 feet of flag pole = 2 feet of shadow
  • 6 feet of flag pole = 4 feet of shadow
  • 9 feet of flag pole = 6 feet of shadow
  • 12 feet of flag pole = 8 feet of shadow
  • 15 feet of flag pole = 10 feet of shadow
  • 18 feet of flag pole = 12 feet of shadow

Therefore an 18 foot flag pole will cast a 12 foot shadow at the same time that a 6 foot man casts a 4 foot shadow.

How high is a tree that casts a 33 ft shadow at the same time a 5 ft pole casts a shadow which is 12 ft long?

(12 / 5) × 33 = 79.2 feet high Divide the pole shadow by the pole height: (12 / 5) = 2.4 feet Times the 2.4 by the tree shadow of 33 feet: 2.4 x 33 = 79.2

What is the height of a flagpole if a person 5 feet tall casts a 10 foot shadow at the same time that the flagpole casts a 40 foot shadow?

The flag pole would be 20 feet. (You can see that the shadows are twice as long.) At a given time of the day, the length of a shadow cast by any object will have the same relationship to its actual height as all other objects. Here the ratio is 5/10 = x/40 and multiplying both sides by 40, 20 = x.

A building casts a 7.5m shadow at the same time that a 40m pole casts a shadow of 3m. How high is the building?

Ratio of shadows = 3m:7.5m :: 1:2.5 So, the ratio of the heights (in the same order) is 1:2.5 ie Ht(Pole):Ht(Building) = 40m:Ht(Building) = 1:2.5 So Ht(Building) = 2.5*40m = 100 metres
