It's necessary to look at the dyer to see how much current it uses, which should be on the maker's plate near where the cable enters the appliance. If it uses less than 50 amps, a 50 amp cable is all right.

∙ 9y agoYou can use #6 that is rated for 55 amps but not the receptacle that is rated for 50 amps. The 30 amp configuration of a dryer plug will not fit in the configuration of a 50 amp receptacle. The breaker feeding the # 6 wire will have to be still a 30 amp breaker because the rating of the dryer cord is still only 30 amps. Remember the breaker protects the wire size.
The correct configuration for a dryer circuit is; 30 amp breaker feeding a three wire #10 cable that connects to a four wire dryer receptacle, NEMA # 14-30R. This receptacle is a 125/230 volt, three pole four wire grounding outlet. From the cable to terminal connections on the receptacle; black to X, red to Y, white to W and bare ground to terminal G. Remember to wrap fasten the ground wire to the junction box's ground terminal screw before termination it on to the receptacle's ground terminal

The only 60 amp receptacle that will be allowed on the 60 amp cable is a three pole four wire grounding 125/250 volt device. The number will be 14-60R. There is a three phase rated receptacle in the three pole four wire grounding type. It is a 15-60R.

In countries that use a single phase split secondary service you can. In modern homes this is the type of circuitry that is used for kitchen split receptacles. On the receptacle the tie bar is removed from the "hot" side of the receptacle. A red wire of the three wire cable is placed on the upper terminal of the receptacle. A black wire of the three wire cable is placed on the lower terminal of the receptacle. The white wire is placed on the opposite side of the receptacle under the silver coloured screw. Is there a adapter for a nema 14-30 plug and a nema 14-50 receptacle?
No there are no adapters made for these types of installations. The reason there are no adapters is to provide a factor of safety. To plug a 30 amp plug into a 50 amp receptacle could allow 50 amps to be applied to a 30 amp rated cord. The 50 amp receptacle is more than likely being fed by a 40 amp breaker. Just change the plug cord to match the ampacity of the breaker ahead of the 50 amp receptacle. Or change the 50 amp receptacle and 40 amp breaker to a 30 amp breaker and use your existing cord plug.
