x^(2) + 5x^(2) = 6x^(2)

Think of it as 2 + 5(2) = 6(2) ( 2 + 10 = 12 = 6(2))

Note : You just add the coefficients(numbers)/.

However, be careful and note the difference for multiplication.

x^(2) X 5x^(2) = 5x^(4) ( That is 'five 'x' to the fourth power').

In this case x^(2) means x X x and 5x^(2) = 5 X x X x , so on multiplication it becomes

5 X x X x X x X x = 5x^(4)
