The standard equation of a straight line in the slope-intercept form is y = mx + c where m is the slope and c is the y intercept.

3x - 6y = 12 can be re-written as 6y = 3x - 12 or y = 1/2x - 2.

-2 is therefore the y intercept (this is when x = 0)

The x intercept (when y = 0) can be obtained from the equation y = 1/2x - 2 : 0 = 1/2x - 2 : 1/2x = 2 : x = 4.
