If you're having trouble with it, you can use the number line. 0 is in the middle, then positive numbers go to the right, and negative to the left so it looks like this
-2 -1 0 +1 +2

If lets say you have the equation:
-3+1

You can look at the number line
-3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3

You move 1 over to the right and then you get: -2

Add a negative to a positive, it's actually very simple.
5+(-2) is the same as 5-2 which is 3

Hopefully, after a while once you get the hang of the number line if you're a visual learner, you'll be able to do it in your head. I hope it helped!
