The ability to have basic math skills seems to be an ability we share with many animals. Even birds such as crows, raven and magpies have demonstrated an ability to count ( at least up to four or so). In humans this ability was driven initially by need to keep track of herded animals, members in a tribe and so on.

Any ability grows stronger with practice. Students are initially taught that there are a series of word that stand for the numbers one to ten, then how to combine these numbers for larger numbers (like twenty five).
